The Boot and Shoe Trade

Those of us who had to study, or at least are familiar with, William Shakespeare's 'Henry V' will recall the stirring speech before the battle of Agincourt, which took place on 25 October 1415 - the feast day of Saints Crispin and Crispinian. The legend tells that these twin brothers fled from persecution in Rome and ended up in Soissons amongst the Gauls, to whom they preached Christianity by day whilst making shoes by night. They were beheaded in Rome in 286 AD, and amongst several other attributions are considered to be the patron saints of those associated with the boot and shoe trade.

There have been several Lovelocks, and rather fewer Lovelucks, who entered the trade in comparatively recent times, and probably many more that we shall never know of from the days before the occupations of ordinary citizens were recorded. However, from 1841 onwards the Census Returns for England and Wales allow us to identify those Lovelocks and Lovelucks who were actively employed in ensuring that their compatriots need not go unshodden. We have also discovered four relevant entries in the USA.

Our extensive Census collections furnish the entries in the table below. (Where an individual can be positively identified a link in the Name column will take you to the Webtrees page for that person, or to the family fragment in which they appear.
