Clandestine Lovelock Marriages

One of the requirements of church (canon) law that was essentially all that applied to marriages before 25th March 1754, when the Clandestine Marriages Act came into force, was that marriages should only take place in a parish where at least one of the parties was resident. However, this was widely flouted. Such marriages are regarded as 'clandestine' even though in practice the bride and groom might not have been hiding their marriage from anyone.

Whilst the Clandestine Marriages Act 1753 made certain requirements mandatory (such as the calling of banns or the issue of a licence, and being married in a church) others (such as the place, registration and witnesses) were only directory. Any marriage that qualified as Clandestine was still valid as long as an Anglican clergyman had presided over it.

The following clandestine Lovelock marriages are transcribed from the imagery at Ancestry.co.uk. As many as five images exist for some of the marriages, so for them the transcriptions below are an amalgam of all the details.

In no case is the precise location of the marriage recorded, although all were apparently carried out in London.
