WHERE ‘LOVELOCK’ OR 'LOVELUCK' WAS A FIRST FORENAME |
There are a comparatively small number of instances where ‘Lovelock’ has been used as a first forename, for both men and women.
Lovelock Maddox (or Maddux, or Maddocks): Born sometime before 1703 when she is mentioned in the Will of her grandmother Elizabeth Lovelock, which Will also indicates that Lovelock was not then 21 years old. She died in 1744, as evidenced by her own Will, and was buried at St Botolph without Aldersgate, London on 25 Feb, recorded as ‘a stranger’, presumably because she had been living at Mitcham, Surrey, although her executors had obviously arranged a City interment.
Lovelock Cousens: He was baptised at Overton, Hampshire on 7 May 1804, the son of Beriosgood and Mary Anne Cousens.
Lovelock Lock: She was baptised at Clifton on Teme, Worcestershire on 26 Apr 1808, the daughter of John and Mary Lock.
Lovelock Davis: She was baptised at West Wittering, Sussex on 12 Jan 1817, the daughter of William and Jemima Davis. She married Robert Pink on 1 May 1837 in Chichester, Sussex, and then James Hart Cook on 30 Aug 1846, also in Chichester. Her death was registered in the East Preston Registration District in Jan-Mar 1892.
Lovelock Cozens: He was baptised at Overton, Hampshire on 29 Jul 1827, the son of Lovelock Cozens (sic) and Elizabeth (nee Taylor) who had married at Overton on 26 Oct 1822. He died on 23 Mar 1908 and is buried in Matakana Public Cemetery, Matakana, New Zealand.
Lovelock Cousins: His birth was registered in the Whitchurch, Hampshire Registration District in Apr-Jun 1853. No mother’s maiden name was recorded, so it may have been an illegitimate birth. There do not appear to be any records of his baptism or death.
Lovelock Kercher: Lovelock's birth and death were registered in the Whitchurch, Hampshire Registration District in Apr-Jun 1853, according to the index imagery at Free BMD. However, neither entry appears in the GRO Online Indices, so we do not know whether Lovelock was male or female. There do not appear to be any records of his or her baptism or death.
Lovelock Couzens (or Cuzens): His birth was registered in the Bradford on Avon Registration District in Jan-Mar 1856. His mother’s maiden name was Curcher. There do not appear to be any records of his baptism or death.
Lovelock James Goffin: His birth was registered in the Newbury Registration District in Jul-Sep 1882. His parents were Nicholas Archibald Goffin and Priscilla Sarah Butcher. He died in Oct-Dec 1882.
Lovelock Frank Smith: His birth was registered in the Guildford Registration District in Jan-Mar 1891. His mother’s maiden name was Cousins. He died aged only 6 in Oct-Dec 1897.
Lovelock Ernest William Henry Johnson: His birth was registered in the Edmonton Registration District in Jul-Sep 1899. His mother’s maiden name was West. His death was registered in the Hackney Registration District in Jan-Mar 1900.
Lovelock Anthony Brown: He died on 27 Nov 2008, having been born on 28 Nov 1933. His birth does not appear in the UK GRO Index.
Lovelock Mason Eldridge, the son of William Eldridge and Mary Unknown, born in Adelaide, South Australia, Australia in 1879, died in Windsor, Victoria, Australia in 1966 at the age of 87. The South Australia Archives reference is 218/376 and the Victoria Archives reference is 3884/1966
Lovelock Frederick Muller, the son of Frederick Muller and Alice Maud Lovelock, born in Queensland, Australia on 31 Oct 1894; the Queensland Archives reference is 1894/C/7636. He married Amy Alma Rodd on 2 Jul 1931, reference 1931/C/2064, and died on 21 Oct 1959, reference 1960/C/785
Lovelock Adams was born in Cincinatti, Ohio in the USA on 9 Jun 1931. She was the daughter of Glenn Wise and Marguerite Nave Adams, and died, after two marriages, on 20 Apr 2020 in Chandler, Arizona in the USA. |

Lovelock W Hassell was born on 16 Feb 1919 in Barbados in the West Indies. He died on 26 Nov 2002, also in Barbados.

Lovelock Makoba was born in 1918 and died in Cape Province on 19 Oct 1993.
Lovelock Mbunyuza was born in 1927 and married Princess Ncipa in Nqwamakwe, Cape Province on 21 May 1952.
Lovelock Sishuba was born in 1961 and died in Johannesburg, Gauteng Province on 22 Apr 2013.
We have only encountered one instance so far of 'Loveluck' being used as a first forename:
Loveluck Ewurafua Hayford Wood was born in the Wandsworth Registration District of London, England in Oct-Dec 1993.
There are considerably more instances of 'Lovelock' or 'Loveluck' being used as a second or third forename, and in the case of Lovelock just two examples of it as a fourth forename. Many of these probably result from the common practice of ascribing to a child the mother's maiden name, or sometimes that of a more distant relative.
